Excerpt from Audacity Gambit:
“Is it awful, growing old? Or being mortal, I guess.” Embarrassed, Emily looked down, scrubbing her toes against the worn carpet.
Biting her lip, Janice shook her head, “Being as you’ve known nothing but mortality, I’m assuming you mean in comparison?” Emily nodded. Her aunt picked at the flaking edge of the countertop before answering. “It can be pretty terrible when I think that twenty years ago I had maybe a century before my hair showed silver. It’s like living on fast-forward, the body deteriorating at a manic rate. There’ve been definite high points though, raising you.”
“That’s an aunt answer, not a Janice answer.” Emily sniffled and tried to roll her eyes.
“True. But nobody deserves to hear the Janice answer before breakfast…”
I love Brenna Zedan. The woman is a force of nature. So talented. So truly and unapologetically herself. When I grow up, I want to be Brenna.
Started reading her novel while my car was getting serviced. The hour I had to wait flew by. Her characters are endearing. The story is compelling. I love it. Love it enough that I came home and drew her fan art.
AUDACITY GAMBIT! Get ya’ some.
The squeals of glee! So flattered and stoked and you have Janice DOWN. Emily has hair long enough to braid, but you don’t know that until later in the story and dangit, if she were to have short hair that would be the cut.
Particularly great is that I don’t describe what folks look like much, partially because I love to see how they get interpreted by others. But clearly, women like Janice are forces of nature that have a look.
Goddamn that horrible cat clock. You know some dude Janice used to date bought it as a terrible gift.
